Crown Melbourne Casino

Overview

The casino is part of Crown Melbourne, a resort complex on the southern bank of the Yarra River in Southbank that opened in June 1994 and is, by its own account, a short walk from the central business district. The state regulator calls it the Melbourne Casino and says it can be found within the Crown Complex in Southbank; the resort itself describes the casino as being at the heart of Crown Melbourne. The same complex has three hotels, Crown Towers, Crown Metropol and Crown Promenade, as well as Crown Spa, restaurants and bars, a conference centre, a retail precinct and Crown LIVE, a live entertainment venue with 1,250 seats.^{1, 2, 4}

Before you go

Opening hours

The casino is open 24 hours a day, seven days a week. On three days of the year, Christmas Day, Good Friday and ANZAC Day, the casino entrances are closed from 4 a.m. to 12 noon.¹

Smart casual attire is required at all times and footwear must be worn. Clothing listed as unacceptable includes ripped, torn or soiled clothing, T-shirts with offensive designs or words, camouflage clothing, work singlets, active sporting attire, manual work clothing or boots, and Ugg boots or rubber gum boots. Management may refuse entry to anyone it considers unsuitably dressed and, for security reasons, may ask for a hat or other headwear to be removed.^{1, 3}

Licence and regulation

The Melbourne Casino is the only casino in Victoria licensed under the Casino Control Act 1991. It is operated by Crown Melbourne Limited, a subsidiary of Crown Resorts Limited, and the casino licence has been granted until November 2050. The Victorian Gambling and Casino Control Commission (VGCCC) regulates the casino and keeps inspectors on site around the clock. In March 2024 the Commission announced that it was satisfied Crown was suitable to operate the casino.^{4, 5}
