The Star Sydney

Overview

The Star Sydney is a casino and entertainment complex at 80 Pyrmont Street in Pyrmont, on the Sydney Harbour foreshore close to Darling Harbour and the central business district. Its operator, The Star Entertainment Group, describes it as an all-in-one destination with accommodation, dining, gaming and live shows, and says it has been part of the Pyrmont foreshore for more than three decades. The complex contains The Star Grand Hotel, The Star Grand Residences and The Darling hotel, more than 20 dining venues run by The Star and its partner operators, and, according to Destination NSW, the Sydney Lyric Theatre and The Star Event Centre.^{1, 2, 3}

The Star Entertainment Group states that the casino at The Star Sydney operates 24 hours a day.²

Age and identification

In New South Wales it is illegal for anyone under 18 to enter a casino, as the NSW Government sets out. Casino staff check identity documents where necessary.⁶

Licence and regulation

Casinos in New South Wales are supervised by the NSW Independent Casino Commission (NICC). The casino licence of The Star was suspended in 2022 and remains suspended. The licence is held by a manager, Nick Weeks, which allows the casino to continue operating its gaming facilities. On 25 September 2026 the NICC announced that the manager's term had been extended until 30 June 2027, and said that the suspension can be lifted at any time if the casino can demonstrate that its remediation efforts have been properly embedded in the business.^{4, 5}
