Warsaw: Hotels & Evening Entertainment

Warsaw is the capital of Poland and stands on the river Vistula. Its Old Town, with colourful tenement houses and narrow streets, is on the UNESCO World Heritage list, and the Royal Route links the Royal Castle with Royal Łazienki Park and Wilanów Palace. The city's tourist office recommends getting around on foot or by public transport.

Visitor information

Things to do during the day

  • The Old Town is on the UNESCO World Heritage list. The Old Town Square was laid out at the turn of the thirteenth and fourteenth centuries, and a statue of the Warsaw Mermaid, the emblem of the city, stands in the middle of it.1
  • The Royal Castle, the seat of Polish rulers from the 16th century, shows royal apartments and paintings by Rembrandt and by Bernardo Bellotto, also known as Canaletto. The column of King Sigismund III Vasa on Castle Square is the oldest secular monument in Warsaw.1, 2
  • The Royal Route takes in the residences of Polish rulers: the Royal Castle, Royal Łazienki Park and Wilanów Palace. In Łazienki, the Palace on the Isle holds paintings from the collection of King Stanisław August Poniatowski, and in summer Chopin concerts are held on Sundays at the Fryderyk Chopin monument.2
  • The Palace of Culture and Science was opened in 1955. Its observation deck on the 30th floor gives a view of the city from a height of 114 metres, and the building houses the main Warsaw Tourist Information office.3
  • The Vistula Boulevards are a kilometres-long riverside promenade, with a lookout point and a pedestrian and bicycle bridge across the river nearby. The Copernicus Science Centre stands right next to them.4

Evening ideas

  • The Grand Theatre, home of the National Opera and the Polish National Ballet, was built between 1825 and 1833 and reopened in 1965 after wartime destruction. Its Stanisław Moniuszko Hall seats 1,800.5
  • At the Multimedia Fountain Park beside the boulevards, water, light and sound shows are held after sunset on Fridays and Saturdays in summer.4
  • In summer the Old Town fills with café gardens and hosts cultural festivals. In winter the Old Town and the Royal Route are lit with illuminations.1

How to get around

The city's tourist office calls walking and public transport the best ways to get around, with buses, trams and the metro to choose from. Tickets are sold at newsstands and ticket machines and must be validated on boarding a bus or tram or at the metro gates. Bus 180 follows the Royal Route to Wilanów past many of the main sights. The metro runs until midnight on weekdays and until 3 a.m. at weekends. Most flights land at Chopin Airport, about 10 km from the city centre, and bus 175 runs from there to the centre and the Old Town area.6, 7
