Overview

Casino da Madeira stands five minutes from the centre of Funchal and is, in its own words, part of a complex based on an original idea by the architect Oscar Niemeyer. The Pestana Casino Park hotel belongs to the same complex and describes the casino as part of it. Besides the gaming room, the casino has two restaurants, three bars, a nightclub, a multi-purpose space and a congress centre with an auditorium and a conference room. The Fórum Pestana occupies its second and third floors, Restaurante Bahia is on the fourth floor with a view over the city, and the auditorium of the congress centre, in a separate building of the complex, holds up to 628 people. Visitors will find a car park with about 60 spaces, a cloakroom, cash machines, a taxi rank and free Wi-Fi.1, 2, 3, 5

Before you go

Opening hours

The casino is open from 3 p.m. to 3 a.m. from Sunday to Thursday, and from 4 p.m. to 4 a.m. on Fridays, Saturdays and the eves of public holidays. It is closed on 24 and 25 December. The Portuguese gaming regulator lists the same hours.1, 6

Admission

Entry requires the casino's Welcome Card, which is free and is used to enter and leave the building. Access to the casino is reserved, and a valid identity document must be shown when requested. According to the gaming regulator, visitors to Portuguese casinos must carry a valid identity document issued by an official body in Portugal or in their country of residence.1, 8

Age and identification

The casino does not admit anyone under 18. Portuguese gaming law prohibits minors from entering the gaming rooms of casinos, as the gaming regulator sets out.1, 9

Dress code

The casino refuses entry to visitors wearing beach sandals, which it defines as including espadrilles, flip-flops and Crocs, and to those in tracksuits or sportswear. It notes that these are only some of its conditions of access.1

Licence and regulation

Casino da Madeira is the casino of the Funchal gaming zone, one of ten gaming zones in Portugal. The gaming regulator names ITI - Soc. de Investimentos Turísticos na Ilha da Madeira, S.A. as the concession holder, and the casino presents the concession as one of two held by the Pestana Group. Gaming in casinos is supervised by the Serviço de Regulação e Inspeção de Jogos (SRIJ), and a gaming inspector is permanently present. Decree-Law 422/89, the Portuguese gaming law, allows games of chance to be operated in the casinos of these zones.4, 6, 7
