Ribeauvillé: Hotels & Evening Entertainment

Ribeauvillé lies on the Alsace Wine Route, between vineyards and mountains. In the Middle Ages it was the seat of the Lords of Ribeaupierre, who built three fortified castles whose ruins still stand above the town. The main street, the Grand'Rue, is lined with buildings from the 15th to the 18th century and squares with Renaissance fountains. Among the vines, the Resort Barrière Ribeauvillé brings a hotel, a casino and a balneotherapy centre together on one site.

  • The Grand'Rue, the main street, and the lanes around it are lined with buildings from the 15th to the 18th century and open onto squares with Renaissance fountains.1
  • Three castle ruins stand above the town: Saint-Ulrich, the oldest and most important, Girsberg and Haut-Ribeaupierre, the highest. All three are reached by a hiking path on the mountainside.1, 2
  • The Tour des Bouchers, the Butchers' Tower, dates from the 13th century and was rebuilt in the 18th. It is one of the defensive towers left from the medieval town walls.1
  • The Maison des Ménétriers, the house of the fiddlers, has a decorated facade dating from 1683. The 18th-century town hall keeps a collection of silver goblets given to the town by the Counts of Ribeaupierre.1
  • The Pfifferdaj, the Fiddlers' Festival, is held on the first Sunday of September. The tourist office calls it the oldest festival in Alsace; it recalls the fiddlers' brotherhood that met in Ribeauvillé from 1481 to elect its king.1
  • The tourist office also recommends a visit to Haut-Koenigsbourg castle, for a view of what a fortified castle of the Middle Ages was like.2
